The main event of National Mentor Week organized by Strong Kids Global was to bring to the forefront the mentors who are the backbone of the program. The 300 coaches, teachers, and athletes have devoted their time and passion to nurturing the youth through fitness, sportsmanship, and mentorship. Even though not all the mentors were present, the event had a very powerful message that it is always worth it to show up for someone else, as one person can make a great impact in the lives of others and that is exactly what mentoring is about.
Each mentor is different, and brings something different to the program — from boxing, basketball, swimming, and running, to whatever. One of the mentors, Avi, a 17-year-old boxing instructor, said, “I felt that being fit was for me only. But now I view it as a very effective and rewarding way to help others discover their inner strength.”
During the week, mentors were engaged in hosting virtual workshops, small group sessions, and having motivational check-ins with their mentees to facilitate their goal-setting process. Athletes’ performance was not the only focus, it was about character, consistency, and leadership too.
The week-long celebration culminated in a virtual reflection session where the mentors talked about their experience being part of Strong Kids Global. The going and coming of the strong, resilient in each case youth helped by building the next generation through self-confidence, life balance, and inspiring them.
